Claude Hines (Chief Operating Officer) and I started this company with one goal in mind— to put Health back into Health Information Technology. We both served as acquisition program managers in the Department of Defense. One of our greatest frustrations was the lack of understanding vendors had with technology in health. They were absolutely talented when it came to designing, building, and maintaining a system. However, they often didn’t understand the ”why”…the outcome we were looking for. As such, Claude and I had to exhaust numerous government resources to help guide them in not only Agency-specific practices, but health-specific practices. As program managers, we watched the funding for system acquisition drain into extensive resources to support the vendors’ understanding of health. There had to be a way to cut the fat. Therefore, we started MicroHealth with the vision to overcome those frustrations; not with a token Chief Medical Officer, but a cadre of health professionals who support Technologists and Informaticists.

This is what we mean by putting Health back into Health IT– It’s bringing the people who understand the customer’s health setting because they are health professionals with experience in the environment. Many of us have held similar positions as those of our customers commercially and in the government. In fact, 15% of our staff are health professionals by trade, working in Health IT roles. I’m still a practicing Physician Assistant, seeing patients once a week to help me stay focused on what matters and guide the company to our vision and mission. That is, everything we do from integrating health systems to upgrading hospitals to windows 10, we stay focused on what matters in the end that ultimately improve:
- Health care outcomes
- Organizational outcomes
- Access to care
- Cost of care
I’m also an Adjunct Professor at UMUC teaching graduate health information technology. And though I’m a bit of a “wirehead,” Health IT is not about Information Technology. It’s about the people that play an important role in healthcare that improve health outcomes, access to care, and help lower costs. It’s the processes that are lean and optimized, that make delivering that iron health triangle a reality. Finally, after you have the right people and the right processes, technology serves as a tool to help the people get through the processes more efficiently and effectively…and that is how we make awesomeness happen.
